Cape Sounion

If you're visiting the capital of Greece, it's absolutely worth making a trip to Sounion. Cape Sounion is one of the most beautiful natural areas of Attica and one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Greece.

It is located at the southern point of the Attica peninsula, overlooking the Aegean Sea, 69 km from Athens.

On the cape stands the Doric Temple of Poseidon, perched picturesquely on the top of a 60-meter high rock above the sea. Additionally, the Temple of Athena Sounia was built in 470 B.C. on a low hill in Sounion, a short distance from the Temple of Poseidon, though very little remains of the temple or the sanctuary are visible today.

The Temple of Poseidon, one of the major monuments of the Golden Age of Athens, has ruins that are now perched on the headland, surrounded on three sides by the Aegean Sea. The temple, which was made of 34 marble columns and stood 20 feet high, was built between 444 and 440 B.C. with local marble from Lavreotiki (south area of Attica). Ancient sailors believed that storms resulted from Poseidon's wrath, and the temple served as a place where they hoped to appease Poseidon and find favor.
